Brother joins family firm - 30 years after they last worked together

A FATHER and son run web design and online marketing company in Bristol has expanded its team – with the addition of a third family member.

Philip Graves has joined his dad, Richard, and brother, David, at GWS Media and its associated company GWS Robotics.

The published author has returned from an 11 year stint in Sweden, where he studied mathematics and economics and set up his own digital book publishing business.

He has now joined the GWS team as a digital copywriter and marketer.

Philip, a former English teacher who speaks French and Swedish fluently, said: “It’s good to be working on projects with my dad and brother again.

“I will be another member of the team and I hope to work my way up the ranks when I prove my worth.”

Philip, David and Richard have worked on computer programming and compiled a series of users’ guides for early home computers over 30 years ago.

Today, with advanced knowledge and technology, the trio also work on programming and with walking, talking robots.

Philip, who ran his own plant nursery business as a teenager before going to university, said: “That early venture and my more recent digital book publishing business, which was marketed exclusively online, have given me considerable experience of running and marketing a business.

“It has hleped me to understand the promotional needs of GWS clients today.”

Philip, who created computer games while at school, said: “I have very different interests from my brother. We are close, but very independent.

“I think this helps us to work better together. We have mutual respect and our skills complement each other. There’s also a strong foundation of trust.

“I know I’m employed to do a job and if I didn’t perform then I would be let go – which is as it should be. There is no preferential treatment.”

The brothers and their parents now all live within a couple of miles of each other, in Upper Knowle. Only their sister has moved from Bristol and is working and living in London.

Philip, a former Weston College music production student, said: “My parents, though separated, remain friends. I’ve been told this is not common and consider myself to be very lucky.”

Creative director David said: “I am proud to be running a firm in which family members get on well with each other – something that isn’t always the case.”

Richard, marketing and financial director, added: “I regard myself fortunate to see so much more of my sons than I might have expected at this stage in my life.

“But it’s important to mention that we have no special privileges and work together as part of the larger GWS team.”
